Have you ever noticed that every house has awkward spaces that defy decorating? Perhaps it is a charming nook that appears to have no real purpose, a too-small entryway or an open duct. No matter how they are, there are several easy and inexpensive ways to rescue such a tricky space and transform it into an attractive design statement.

Here are 6 easy ways to design your awkward space.

1. A small nook near a cramped entryway – The challenge dealing with this space is that it attracts as much traffic as a foyer does. So adding furniture to this tiny space often leaves it more cramped than ever. Instead, try placing a narrow console against the wall and use it to catch in all keys and smartphones. Hang in a nice art high on the wall, so that it does not get knocked down with all coming and going.

2. Aspacenear the window – Some old houses often have this small nook that seems to defy modern purpose. Make the most of such spaces by creating a cosy corner for you or your kids to read. All you need to do is create a platform for a large cushion and throw in some colourful pillows. Use the space underneath the platform for storage.

3. Tight corners – Often one corner of the room will look blank or boring. Add architectural interests by leaning a mirror against a wall or set a tall floor lamp or a tall house plant in the corner. This classic distraction will play beautifully with other design elements in the room.

4. Windowless Kitchen – Working inside a windowless kitchen can give you a feeling of cooking in a closet. To offset this feeling of shutting away, start with recessed lighting for a sunshine glow. Under-cabinet task lights will make your work surface appear larger.Countertops, cabinets, appliances with a shiny surface will lend extra sparkle to the kitchen area.

5. Long, Narrow Hall – Using fresh white walls are the classic choice for such a hall, though textured grasscloth wallpaper would work equally well.Go for a modern, sleeker, simple black and white furniture to keep the space look interesting. For the walls, create a gallery with colourful artwork hung in a line, with some frames left intentionally empty. Finish the space with proper lighting. Try overhead track lights or wall-mounted lights to illuminate the art space.

6. Living room with minimal wall space – If the wall space in the living room is really very little and is driving you nuts, take a look at your dining room. Could you go for a swap? Multiple windows don’t really matter in a dining room. All you need to place is here is a table, chairs and maybe a sideboard.
