Sometimes dealing with awkward spaces can be quite provoking. However, it hasalways been a pleasure for Vdesignspaces to tackle such dynamics withcreative ideas. We are delighted to share a few suggestions that were given to our clients to overcome six such challenging areas.

1. A Small Entryway– Placing a shoe rackor a decorative vase next to a smallentrywaywould not be a great idea.Space won’t be free enough to hold much and only will be an irritant. Rather, place a largedesk or storage piece at the first available open wall. This will work two ways, 1.as a workspace, 2. as an entertainment centre.Ifthere is no place fora table, a few hooks and floating shelves are all that you need to manage your essentialssuch askeys, umbrella, jacket, cap, etc.

2. A Long Hall or ASmall Home–Clutter will be noticedquickly in a tight space like this. The solution would be to install wall-mounted cabinets or shelves and lit up space with sufficient lights. This willpreventthe area from feeling too heavy or cluttered. Choose cabinets that are narrow enough andallow ample walking space.Ensure that the cabinet surfaces are carefully curated on the edges and floors are clean.

3. Multiple Doors &Windows in the Living Room –If there are too many doors, windows in the living room that prevents you from placing furniture near the walls, try pulling the arrangement towards the centreof the room. Use the symmetry of a matching pair of sofas to counteract the chaos of the entries and exits.Roll out a cosyrug to anchor the conversation area.

4. Eat-in Kitchen –In a place where rectangular or square tables would stick out and give you a poke, go for a round or an oval shape.Curved shapes fit better into tricky spaces, softening the hard edges ofa room. Around table by the wall looks natural, instead of keeping it right at the centre.

5. A Small Studio Apartment – Careful planning of small-scale multi-purpose furniture is the key toa tiny space.Useglass tabletops and mirrors on the wall to createan illusion of a bigger space.Optfor storage ottomans oran antique dresser that has in-built storageto meet your functional needs. Finally, ensure proper lighting in every corner of the space because nothing shrinks a room faster than poor lighting.

6. Long &Narrow Room – It is best to deal with a long and narrow room by visual split and demark the area for specific purposes. A small space is always easier to decorate andvisually appealing. All you need is a piece of furniture that acts asa space breaker. For example, instead of placing a sofa against the wall, rotate itperpendicular to the wall as a space divider. Place a low bookshelf cabinet or a console tablebehind the sofa as a utility unit on the other side.
