Making Home-Office Ergonomic

During the pandemic, work from home has become a forced choice than a sensible option. A dedicated workspace in your home helps you set aside household distractions and focus on work.

A home office design should not only motivate you to get the last bit of work done, but also a place where every idea can be easily documented.

We have gathered the 6 essentials required to create an impeccable home office.

1. Identify the Space - This space has to be comfortable, clutter-free with minimal design. It should be strategically located so that you are not disturbed by anything that is happening in the house. Space should also be secluded from tempting distractions such as TV and snacks.

2. Clean and Bright – A clean and bright space is the perfect place to think and create ideas. Once space has been identified, check for proper temperature control and lighting. A place beaming with natural light and clean air will certainly bring positive aspects to work. In case of excessive sunlight, a drape on a window or a venetian blind would do the needful. On the other hand, ambient and task lights are helpful for a space deprived of natural light.

3. Dimension and Direction of Desk - A desk should range between 25 to 30 inches in height and should have enough clearance for comfortably placing the thighs, knees, and feet under the desk. If the existing desk is too high, then the height of the chair should be raised and adjusted accordingly. The desk should have enough space to keep all your things comfortably. Make sure the direction of the desk doesn't reflect glare on your computer screen.

4. Ergonomic Chair – Invest in an ergonomic chair where the height of the chair and armrest can be adjusted. It should have good lumbar support, an adjustable backrest, head support, and a 5 pedestal wheelbase. If you are using a dining chair, then recommend a lumbar support pillow that provides good support to the spine. Your feet should be resting on the floor comfortably, if not then use a small stool as a footrest.

5. Built-in Storage – The space should have enough provision to accommodate your laptop, files, papers, printer, and other office essentials. It would be ideal to have cabinets and drawers at your hands' reach with minimum body movements.

6. Manage your Cables – Check for proper electrical points to run your office gadgets efficiently. Try to tuck your cables and wires away behind your desk or inside your built-in storage cabinets. Nothing slows down productivity like a space that’s messy and doesn’t feel comfortable.

A well-designed and compact home-office, wherein all office essentials are strategically placed and blends with the overall design of the home make the space more inviting for work.
