"Minimalism is defined as a way of reducing the non-essential, to focus on what is truly important” as said by Steve Jobs. It is clearing away all but the most essential things. It is to make room for that which gives us the most joy. Clear away the distractions so that we can create something incredible."
While I was certainly impressed by the graciousness of the Japanese culture, what fascinated me the most is their practice of the Zen Buddhist Philosophy ‘Less is More’, which promotes a minimalist lifestyle. This philosophy allows us to save time due to having less clutter and fewer possessions. This means less time in cleaning and maintaining and less time searching for things. On the contrary, we are too busy being overwhelmed by physical, digital, and mental clutter that leads to increased anxiety and an overall sense of dissatisfaction. Minimalism is an antidote to that state of overload.
A minimalist who clears away distractions and single tasks would also waste less time with those distractions and in switching back and forth between tasks. Simplicity isn’t just a visual style or absence of clutter. It involves digging through the depth of complexity. For example, to have no screws or hanging wires, you can end up having a design that is so complex. The better way is to go deeper with the simplicity, to understand everything about it and how it can be elegantly presented. Making anything look minimal yet elegant and functional is the hardest part. The design approach, therefore, should be a beautiful confluence of minimalism, simplicity, and functionality.
Thus the mantra ‘Less is More’ makes life simple and allows you to focus on what matters. Create time and space to enjoy the simple things in life, like spending time with our loved ones, exercising and getting creative, or just doing nothing.
