Ambient Lighting

Ambient or General lighting provides an area with overall illumination and is fundamental for a good lighting plan. The basic concept of ambient lighting is to replace sunlight. Ambient Lighting radiates a comfortable level of brightness without glare and allows you to see and walk about safely. These lights are softer and used to create a calming effect, than the harsh halogen lighting. 

Ambient lighting can be accomplished with chandeliers, ceilings, wall-mounted, recessed, track, and lanterns lights. 

Accent Lighting 

Accent Lighting adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As a part of the decorating scheme, it is used to spotlight paintings, houseplants, paintings, sculptures, and architectural elements. It is also used to highlight texture walls, drapery, or outdoor landscaping.  

To be effective, the accent lighting lumen should be three times more than the ambient lighting surrounding it. Accent lighting is usually provided by recessed, track, under-cabinet, or wall-mounted fixtures.  

Task Lighting

Task lighting helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, writing, grooming, cooking, homework, hobbies, games, and so on. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eyestrain.

Task lighting can be provided with a track, pendant, under-cabinet, soffit, tape lights, and portable lamps. 

Lighting can make a big difference in how you feel about your home. When planning your lighting, look at the activities that occur in each room, the atmosphere you want to create, and the decorative elements you wish to emphasize.
