Colour in Bedroom

Your bedroom is one of the most important rooms in your home. It is your private space that ideally reflects a certain sense of tranquillity and allows you to be you. It is a room where you begin and endyour day, it should be a space that leaves you completely stress-free and relaxed.

To make this all-important space as relaxing, as cosy and as comfortable as possible, you need to have a good bed, pillow, warm comforter, and furniture that suits the shape and size of the room.

One of the important intangibles that we miss to make this space “our space” is the colours in the room. Colours in the room include colour on the wall, ceiling, furniture, bed sheets and pillows. In this article, we will have a closer look at wall colours only.

Colours act in three basic ways: active, passive and neutral. You can easily match your bedroom’s colours to your personal desires and your taste. Light colours are expansive and airy thereby making the bedroom seem larger and brighter. Dark colours are sophisticated and warm; they give the bedroom a more intimate appearance.

Red: Red is known to raise a room’s energy level, it pumps the adrenaline like no other hue. However, red is known to raise blood pressure, speed respiration, and heart rate. It is usually considered too stimulating for bedrooms. But if you are typically in the room only after sunset, you will be seeing it mostly by lamplight, when the colour will appear muted, rich and elegant.

Yellow: Yellow captures the joy of sunshine and reflects happiness. It is an excellent choice for kitchens, dining rooms and bathrooms, where it is energizing and uplifting. Even though yellow is a cheery colour, it is not a good choice for a bedroom. Studies show that people are more likely to lose their temper in a yellow interior. Babies also seem to cry more in yellow rooms. This colour tends to create feelings of frustration and anger.

Blue: Blue is said to bring down blood pressure and slow respiration and heart rate. So it is considered serene, calming and relaxing and it is often recommended for bedrooms. If you opt for a light blue as the primary colour in a bedroom, it can be balanced with warm hues for the furnishings and fabrics to reduce the chilling effect (especially if you are using a darker shade of blue).

Green: Green is considered the most restful colour for the eye. Combining the refreshing quality of blue and the cheerfulness of yellow, green is suited for almost any room on the house. In the bedroom, it encourages unwinding but has enough warmth to promote comfort and togetherness. The green colour is also believed to help with fertility, hence making it a great choice for the bedroom.

Orange: Orange evokes excitement and enthusiasm, and is an energetic colour. This colour is great in rooms like exercise rooms where a lot of energy and enthusiasm is required. However, it is not a great colour to have in the bedroom.

Neutrals (black, grey, white and brown) are basic to the decorator’s tool kit. All-neutral schemes fall in and out of fashion, but their virtue lies in their flexibility. Add colour to liven things up and subtract it to calm things down.

Black is best used in small doses as an accent. Indeed, some experts maintain that every room needs a touch of black to ground the colour scheme and give it depth.
