Nivedita & Ramasubramanian

Nivedita, as I stepped into your home, I instantly felt the warmth — the scent of sandalwood, the inviting colours, and that subtle elegance. What’s the secret behind creating such an atmosphere?

"For me, home is my safe haven. It reflects who I am. When my surroundings are organised and beautiful, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction. I think it’s about filling the space with things you truly love — pieces that hold meaning and bring joy every time you see them."

(I couldn’t help but smile as I walked in — you could feel the care and love in every corner.)

Your apartment is full of personal touches — travel souvenirs, hand-painted art, and traditional elements. How do you decide what to bring into your home?

"I never decorate all at once. I let the home evolve naturally. If I see something — whether on a trip or in a local market — and it speaks to me, I bring it home. I believe every object should have a story, whether it’s a bone china teacup collected over 20 years or a painting by a family member."

(We paused by the living room photo wall, and I could see the stories unfold — each piece a memory lovingly placed.)

I noticed a lovely balance between traditional and modern styles. Was this a conscious design choice?

"Not really — I don’t stick to a single genre. I enjoy mixing rustic with modern. For instance, I might pair a Rajasthani fabric headboard with sleek wall panelling, or place a bronze swing in a modern living room. The blend makes the space more personal."

(I ran my fingers along the bronze swing — it felt cool and grounded, yet it somehow added a touch of elegance to the airy room.)

The colour palette here is striking — calming blues with pops of yellow, rust, and teal. How did you decide on these combinations?

"I like a neutral base — it keeps the home feeling airy and timeless. Then I add colour through accessories like cushions, throws, or artwork. That way, I can refresh the look without a big overhaul."

(I noticed how the sunlight played on the cushions, making the colours glow softly — such a cheerful yet relaxing effect.)

Is there a particular corner or feature in your home that you’re especially attached to?

"The balcony, definitely. It’s my little pocket of peace — with potted greens, Bastar paintings, and a bench where I sit with coffee or a book. It connects me to the outdoors and brings in natural light and fresh air."

(We stepped outside and felt the breeze — I could almost imagine long, lazy evenings spent here with a cup of chai.)

I also saw some beautifully repurposed furniture. Do you often reuse or recycle pieces?

"Yes, I believe in giving things a second life. Many of my older pieces have been reupholstered or refinished to fit the current style of my home. They carry memories, and that makes them irreplaceable."

(I lingered by a wooden shelf, noticing the subtle wear that added character — it was like the furniture was telling its own story.)

How important is family involvement in the way your home has come together?

"Very important. My daughter Sukruti, for instance, curated our photo wall collage. It’s not just about design — it’s about living in a space that reflects our shared memories."

(We laughed as we looked at a few playful travel photos — the warmth of family really shines through every corner.)

If you had to share one decorating tip with our readers, what would it be?

"Don’t rush. Let your home tell your story over time. Choose things that mean something to you rather than following trends. That’s how you create a space that feels truly yours."

(I nodded, feeling inspired — decorating isn’t just about furniture or colours, it’s about weaving your life into the space.)

Nivedita, Thank you so much for giving your valuable time and sharing your views.  It was a pleasure to feature the home you have created and share it with our readers.
