Vrinda, as I have walked inside your house, I find it full of life and positivity, and far from being the fact that it’s a rental apartment.  What is the secret ingredient?

“I guess it’s inner happiness!  I would like to give the credit to my loving husband and son, who have always supported me in pursuing my multiple hobbies and activities.

You have always surprised everyone with your talent, be it winning the Mrs Pune title, singing, cooking, painting, making handicrafts, decorating the house or playing some of the toughest sports games like squash or tennis.  How do you manage to pick up interest in these varied areas and also excel in everything?

“Putting my heart and soul in whatever I do is a quality that I have picked up from my father.  He was a multipotentialite personality and was a huge motivator for me since my childhood.  He would encourage me to do my best in every activity and enjoy the beauty of life to its fullest and I will be always grateful to him to have instilled this quality in me.”

I have always found your space interesting and new.  Do you make purchases often?

“I occasionally buy new things and purchase only if I connect with any article, though I like to have visual newness once in a while.  With this intention, I have designed most of my furniture that is movable.  This gives me the freedom to rearrange them and change the look of the room whenever I want.”

What was the most challenging part of your home interior design?

“As it is a rental flat, I cannot make any changes to the house without the owner’s approval.  Therefore, bringing newness within the available things can sometimes be challenging.”

How did you get information about the material that you could use?

“I like to do an online search for most of the information about furniture or services.  Many times it is not possible to have a clear or complete idea of the product on the internet, and that’s when I prefer to visit the market and get first-hand information.”

Did you recycle or reuse your old furniture?

“Yes, I strongly believe in reclaim, reuse and recycle philosophy.  Keeping this in mind, I had reclaimed wood from my old Ikea foot-on and my bed.  That material was later converted into three furniture pieces, i.e. a cupboard, a dressing table and a traditional Indian seating for my living room.”

Which parts of your house do you love the most?

“I spend most of my time in the living room, as I find it very cosy, comfortable and well-lit. Also, I love my balcony, as it has a full view of greenery with indoor house plants and outdoor garden view.”

Do you believe in blending style with sustainability?

“Aniruddha and I have been following this for many years. We believe style, sustainability and maintenance, all go hand in hand.”

“There is a lot of old wooden furniture and antique wooden pieces in our house that needs to be polished periodically to retain their shine.”

“I have a personalized collection of brass antique pieces.  These need to be hand-polished every fortnightly, since the climate here is humid throughout the year.”

“The indoor plants need a lot of care and attention too.”

“All these activities keep us grounded and the outcome brings a lot of peace and tranquillity.”

How would you describe your overall experience of interior decoration?

“Currently, I am staying in a rental apartment for more than 8 years.  My passion for creativity and handicraft has encouraged me to collect a lot of paintings, antiques and artefacts from all over the world.  These become my jump start point when I begin my decoration plan.”

Would you like to share a design tip with our readers that have helped you?

“When it comes to home decor, I feel practicality is equally important to aesthetics.”
