Mahesh, when it comes to travel, food, art or interior, you are an enthusiast and have rich and varied taste.  Does your latest home design conclude all your aspirations in home interiors?

"Both Esha and me like to explore as much as we can when it comes to travel, food, art or interior.  Wherever we are travelling, we have an eye for exquisite architecture and artefacts.  Since we also love to beautify our home, we try to capture those memories in our small abode through various design elements.  For us, this is one of the outlets for creativity."

"Yes, the current home interiors have met all our requirements for the next 3-4 years."

Did you hire the services of an architect or an interior designer?

"No, we did not hire any architect this time as there was no major civil work.  Since I and Esha love designing the home and had a clear cut idea of what we wanted, we both went ahead doing the interior designing all by ourselves."

What was the most challenging part of your home interior design?

"We always like to upgrade our house with the latest trend, hence the most challenging part for us was to finalize material that would express the design we wanted to portray in each room. We realised that hiring an interior designer would have helped in procuring the material from the right place and to smoothly execute the plan.”

How did you get information about the material that you could use?

"We did a lot of online searches for the material we were looking out for.  For a few materials that were being used for the first time, we got reconfirmation from friends and some known vendors in the industry."

Did you recycle or reuse your old furniture?

"Yes, I am a strong supporter of the Green Earth Movement and I believe that we all should be doing what is possible to conserve mother nature.  In this pursuit, we have reclaimed many of our old furniture and reused artefacts until now.  In the future, we have planned to design interiors, that can maximize usage of existing material and minimize new purchases, as far as possible."

Which parts of your house do you love the most?

"I love my master bedroom the most, where I like to meditate and attain my inner calmness.  There is a corner in the living room, which is my favourite place too, where I like to sit and read for hours.  It is here I relax and my creative thought process activates."

Has any part of your space turned out to be better than expected?

"The entire house has turned out to be the way we had visualized, except for one room that has turned out to be better than expected, and that’s my study room.  Stepping into this room gives me a sense of inspiration.  It’s here my collection of favourite books are displayed on the shelf and they have motivated me to spare a few hours of reading time at least once a week."

Do you believe in blending style with sustainability?

"Yes, our mantra is Go-Green and support local artisans.”

“We have reclaimed and reused a lot of wood from our old furniture."

“The last renovation theme was based on local paintings and artefacts.”

“We have used power-saving devices, such as switches and dimmers throughout the flat.”

“The air-conditioning is used only during extreme weather conditions, else the cross ventilation in the apartment takes care of the climatic needs.”

“The entire balcony is converted into a garden with exotic plants and there are at least two indoor plants in every corner of the rooms."

How would you describe your overall experience of home renovation?

"For us, the need for change in home decoration every 3-4 years is not only an exhilarating and satisfying experience but also we love doing it. Our passion for decorating our home has pursued us to have a personal gallery of artefacts and paintings that we have collected over years during our various travels.”

Would you like to share a design tip with our readers, that has helped you?

"It is important to have a clear-cut image of your interior theme, even before you approach an architect. Try and keep the theme uniform across the entire apartment, so that there is a smooth transition in the design."

“We have a huge collection of artefacts and therefore each one of them has been allotted a storage space in the corner of the house.  Every artefact takes its turn to be displayed after 4 years and the design of our interiors changes accordingly. This not only keeps our space interesting but also enlivens our memories.”

What are your unmet needs in this sector? What service or product do you wish existed?

"I wish there was a common platform to bring all local artisans together, especially in our country with so much diversity.  This will not only enable us to conserve our rich heritage but also give earning opportunities to rural India and provide consumers who wish to explore a wider market.  Growth in this sector is the need of the hour."

Are you looking forward to any new concept in the future market?

"We should restrict the use of non-biodegradable material and re-use natural substances as much as we can.”

“Some of the concepts that I keep on exploring are - How to use waste creatively or how waste can become a theme by itself and be commercially viable for bringing larger scale?  For example, concepts like the use of daily thrash like plastic and non-biodegradable material for making bricks, roads, and pavements should gain traction. This will encourage people to grow, conserve and use natural resources and thereby lead to a sustainable lifestyle."
